    i̯em-
    English meaning: to hold
Deutsche Übersetzung: “halten, zusammenhalten, paaren, bezwingen”
Material: O.Ind. yámati “zũgelt, lenkt; streckt from, reicht dar”, yácchati ds., yatá-ḥ “gehalten”, yáma-ḥ m. “rein”, yántra- n. ‘strang, band, strap”; Av. yam-, yasaitē, O.Pers. Imperf. ayasatü, participle Av. yata- “hold, stop”, yüta- “zugewiesener allotment, possession “ (to ü compare die heavy root form O.Ind. yámitavai, Bartholomae IF. 11, 141 f.); O.Ind. yamá-ḥ m., Av. yǝ̄ ma- m. “twin”; O.Ind. GN Yamá-ḥ “twin, hermaphrodite “ = Av. Yimō; Lat. geminus “zwillingsgeboren, twin; double” hat probably das g- from the root gem- “ grasp, zusammenpressen” (above S. 368 f.) bezogen; M.Ir. emon m., emuin f. (*emno-, *emnī) “Zwillingspaar”, emnaid “verdoppelt”; perhaps here Gmc. *ibna- “eben, gleichmäßig”, whether from *imná- < *jemnó-, in Goth. ibns “eben”, O.N. jafn, jamn, O.E. efn, Eng. even, asächs. eƀan, O.H.G. eban “еben”; after Gũntert (Weltkönig 337 ff.) here the O.N. GN Ymir as “ hermaphrodite “ from Gmc. *i̯umii̯áz, IE *iem(i)i̯ós? not certainly is, whether here also Gk. ἥμερος “tame, domesticated, mild”, ἡμερίς, -ίδος “the veredelte Rebstock”, ἡμερόω “zahme” (with lengthened grade ē), and as zero grade Lat. redimiō “binde um, umwinde, bekränze”, as well as infula “priesterliche head fascia” (*im-dhlü??) belong. Das with Gk. ἥμερος identical O.H.G. asächs. jümar, O.E. gēomor “ sad “, Subst. O.H.G. jümar “ misery “ (originally ostensibly “bedrũckt”) dũrfte though because of O.N. amra “ lament”, das to emja, ymja “howl” belongs, rather an interjection entsprungen sein. Welsh afar “affliction, lament” (M.Ir. amar ds.) kann not j- verloren have and muß already deswegen fernbleiben.
